Turning on a Dime

When your on the outs with Jack Roeser, your on the outs.  After being the anointed for Illinois Governor, it appears that  Oberweis made the horrible mistake of endorsing the eventual winner, Judy Baar Topinka.  John Biver does the stenography:

Politics can create problems for friendships, but it can also lead to problems for people who are just friendly with each other. A lot of folks personally like Jim Oberweis. The times I?ve spoken with him I?ve found him likable ? and I even supported him for governor just last year.

Many of us, however, have a problem with Jim Oberweis? approach to politics. In a sentence ? it?s all about Jim.

Think about it for a second: imagine the good that could?ve been done by Jim had he skipped just one of his recent statewide campaigns and instead spent a few million dollars helping reform candidates win seats in the Illinois General Assembly.

Say he would?ve skipped that crowded primary for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and instead spent some of his money helping elect a better class of state legislators. That might well have made a real impact on the mind of Republican primary voters during last year?s race for governor.

Before he first ran in 2002, the name Oberweis never came to anyone?s mind as people looked for potential leaders. After he lost that 2002 U.S. Senate primary there were many ways he could?ve pitched in to help build a viable party. Instead, the next we heard of him he was running for the U.S. Senate again in 2004.

Using that 2004 cycle differently, he could?ve been seen as the go-to guy for 2006. Instead, he’s seen by many as just one more rich guy trying to buy himself a political office. He?s still not seen as the go-to guy even after three statewide runs.

His name has popped up here and there occasionally between the times when he?s funding his own campaigns. He put his name in for the state party chairmanship after Topinka stepped down, and later tried for the top party post in Kane County. When he failed to get either of those, he disappeared.

After Jim lost the 2006 primary for Governor he would?ve have been better off completely disappearing. Instead, he made an abrupt about-face and showed an important insincerity regarding one of the key message planks in his just-completed campaign. He had spoken out aggressively against corruption within the Illinois GOP and as a result finished a strong second place. Then, incredibly, he decided to endorse Topinka. To put it another way:

When Andy Martin starts talking about the great divisions in the Democratic Party, someone should just bring up the town of Carpentersville and see how he reacts.

But this kind of attack raises the stakes. What happens if Oberweis wins? Is Lauzen allowed to back him in the general election?  Fealty to Roeser appears the only way to not face attacks later.

The Continuing Travails of the Illinois Circular Firing Squad Team

Aaron Chambers writes one of the best articles on the current state of the GOP I’ve seen in the new Illinois Issues.

With the quote of perhaps the year:

“My favorite conversation with Jack Roeser was about the second year I was governor when he came in and said, ‘We should be more like George Ryan,'” Edgar says. “Of course he turned on George Ryan — not because of the ethics issue but because George turned out to be more liberal than he thought he was going to be.”

There’s a lot in the article and I’ll revisit it, but it’s a must read.

No Comment Needed

From Illinois Review:

That moment never came and now his resignation has been announced. Call it an early holiday gift to the enemies of the United States both foreign and domestic. Few times in American history has such a distinguished public servant been so scurriously villified by critics for doing such an outstanding job with honor and integrity.

Thank God for Jack Roeser

It certainly shows God has blessed us with humor.

From the new Political Radar column at the Family Taxpayer Network we learn that Bill Brady isn’t donating $50,000 to Jack Roeser, and Roeser is pissed because:

Jack Roeser personally contributed the lion?s share of funds to make the incredibly successful petition gathering effort possible. Jack is merely calling on his fellow Republican ? another wealthy man ? to carry his weight. Jack is asking that the donation go to the independent Protect Marriage Illinois, not to FTN as a reimbursement. As everyone knows, there is still work to be done to ensure that the Referendum stays on the November ballot.

If there is a stupid conservative idea in Illinois, it’s probably funded by Roeser. Now the standard has become if you don’t donate to a Jack’s pet peeve and don’t try and burn down the party, you are spoiler responsible for Oberweis’ loss.

It has to be really nice to be rich enough to pay enough people to run your personal pet peeves around the state and have them attack everyone else.

And T. Roeser Fires into the Crowded Circle

According to him, it was Topinka, not Kimme who said Bush should do fundraising for her late at night….

Now it develops that the source of those comments was not an aide, not Nancy Kimme but Topinka herself! Her campaign sought to protect her by saying that an aide was responsible for the devastating insult to the president from an establishment-anointed Republican nominee for governor. Some unnamed aide was given the blame, but it?s not true: no matter how many denials they make. Result: the dinner which Topinka hoped would raise big bucks has been shelved for now, despite Blagojevich?s stepping up his paid media attacks. Yet, understandably, the White House feels that for a statewide Republican candidate to say this to a national correspondent is almost unforgivable. Don?t be too easily convinced by a quick Topinka tut-tut denial. After all, she continues to steadfastly deny refusing to endorse U. S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald for reelection even though more than 75,000 listeners heard her wiggle out of providing support?

Just keeping the stories alive…

1994 News Article on Edgar

Sound familiar?

Sun-Times August 1, 1994

HEADLINE: Radio Ads Back New Party

BODY:
With just a week left to file third-party ballot petitions, a newly formed conservative group is airing radio commercials designed to support the Term Limits & Tax Limits Party.

The group, Illinois Pro-Family Voters, said in a statement that Gov. Edgar and his Democratic challenger, Dawn Clark Netsch, hold “the same liberal positions on gays, gambling and abortion.”

Monty Johnson, the group’s spokesman, said, “Unless Steve Baer enters the race, we’re all being held hostage by liberals like Edgar and Netsch.”

Baer, a Chicago businessman, challenged Edgar in the 1990 Republican primary. His name heads a ticket on petitions being circulated by the Term Limits & Tax Limits Party, though he has not announced his candidacy for governor.

For inclusion on the Nov. 8 ballot, petitions with at least 25,000 voters’ signatures must be submitted to the State Board of Elections by Aug. 8.

Newcom Nukem

Lee Newcom suggests Judy may not fired up the base:

A significant part of the Republican base has some serious questions about Judy Barr Topinka. If she fails to aggressively address those issues there will be no one to blame but her for depressing GOP turnout in November. In the primary I predicted her to be our weakest general election candidate of the 4 candidates. That calculation was based on 1) losing a significant part of the base GOP vote because of her liberalism and 2) her inability to articulate a message of leadership to the people of this state.

The one thing I can’t figure out is why Roeser is pushing the marriage amendment this cycle now that Topinka is on the ballot. Even though many of the voters may not like Topinka, they would probably vote for her rather than the Guv. Then again, it probably won’t be on the ballot so who cares.

The ultimate problem right now for Judy is that Judy is getting hit from the right and the left and she doesn’t have the money to keep up counter attacks for months. Unless she can figure out how to break the cycle she has a real problem.

Burning Down the House!
