Annexation Alternatives

Exploring the annexation of St. Louis City and County brings in some mail:

It’s simple. Article VI Section 5 Missouri Constitution: A county may be dissolved by vote of two-thirds of the qualified electors of the county voting thereon, and when so dissolved all or portions may be annexed to the adjoining county or counties as provided by law. Don’t say nothing about the adjoining county having to be a Missouri county.

On the other hand, the Lege would gladly place an amendment on the ballot.

Shall Article VI of the Missouri Constitution be amended to rid Missouri of the godless wasteland known as the City of St. Louis and permit same to secede from the State and annexed into the godless State of Illinois.

Needs a little work but it’s a start.

If only the City is included, then any County residents and businesses that want in on the action have to move. After annexation, Illinois secedes from Bi-State Development.

Maybe we can trade the Roesers in the deal.

Netroots V. Schumer in CT SEN

I tend to pay close attention to the national political scene and would spare the readers here my take, but since the Connecticut Dem primary race is very Netroots centric, I’m going to broach the subject here.

There is a lot of hyper analysis over Senator Chuck Schumer’s statement that the DSCC would support an independent bid by Senator Lieberman. Markos was pissed and he generally reflects the sentiment of much of the progressive blogosphere, but the hand wringing continues with Jim Dean entering the fray recently.

With so many keys being stroked (instead of ink being spilt) over this, I have to wonder if people are missing an obvious factor.

Joe Lieberman is a Jewish Senator from Connecticut. I would think he has some big donors in either NY or Connecticut that are close to him and have expressed to Chuck Schumer their dissastisfaction with this whole Lamont thing.

After all, he did almost become vice-president and then ran for president. I think Schumer is just humoring some people so he can get back to trying to win a Dem majority in the Senate.

One more thing about…Ann Coulter

So, a hearty thanks to Larry for asking me to sub on one of the finest political blogs (and the first one I read). I?m honored and flattered.

And now, if I may use this platform for an indulgence?

?I?ve always taken the Ann Coulters of the world with something less than a grain of salt. She?s no less a shock artist than Marilyn Manson. I don?t believe she believes most of what she says or writes ? but boy does her act sell books.

I typically take my cue on Coulter et al. from the wise Lisa Simpson, who, in Treehouse of Horror VI, in the face of giant, murderous advertising icons, joins Paul Anka to remind us that advertising is only effective if you pay attention, so ?Just Don?t Look.?

Sorry, guarantee void in Tennessee.

But the flip-side of that argument is that words can do harm. And harmful words deserve to be challenged. And a blogger friend of Mr. and Mrs. Turgidson, Heather Peet, provides one of the best challenges I?ve read.

If righteous indignation is your thing, well, Heather?s got it in spades. Blogging from halfway around the globe, Heather brings the perspective of a mom, a member of a military family, and a religious Catholic. It?s compelling, and her posts are funny, well-written, and only sometimes political. Give her a look.

Heather adds some classic Coulter that left me wondering?

She [Coulter] once said, in reference to terrorists, “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.”

If I may?our conservative friends have defended THIS type of speech, and then, with straight faces, suggested anti-war sentiment and criticism of the president embolden our enemies and threaten our armed forces? Really? But I thought they hated us for our freedom.

Can You Name All Ten Commandments?

A while back Roll Call ran a story (for those of you with Roll Call subscriptions) about how excited a Georgia Republican named Jack Kingston was to get interviewed by Stephen Colbert for his “Better Know a District” series.

Kingston was so enthusiastic that his office sent out an e-mail to some of his GOP colleagues encouraging them to appear. He also offered Colbert a ticket to the State of the Union address, which Colbert declined. Kingston even took advantage of his interview to get his daughter, Betsy, a college senior, an internship on the show.

Boy should Lynn Westmoreland not have listened to him.
