Leader Lawsuit Watch Day 6

I have to say, they are making news. It’s hit the major outlets and is now in play. And Proft was on O’Reilly last night. Newsmax has picked it up.

I’m still confused about the reasoning, but I’m all for pursuing open records, even if the Leader isn’t always. I think this may become at least a couple days worth of stories in the national media.

  1. I’m mainly confused as to why they picked Kerry rather than, say, Topinka or … well, I guess they’d have to look to a Democrat, wouldn’t they? *cheap snigger*

Seriously: This was all Republicans, all the time. The only reason they can possibly be considering going after Kerry is to say to Democrats: “who’s snickering now, eh, bitches?”

  2. I think it relates to their conviction that the liberal press hates Republicans and only picked up the story because it involved a Republican so they are ‘showing the hypocrisy’ by targeting Kerry.

To them, every file now has to be sought and by not doing it the Trib is being hypocritical.

To me there are differences even though I’m not a fan of sealing files
    1) No suggestions have been made that embarrassing material is covered
    2) Kerry hasn’t made any claims about what is contained in the files
    3) Going after every file is different from going after specific files with allegations out there.

Ultimately, only the privileged get their files sealed so I think the notion of equality before the law is a reasonable case to pursue opening Kerry’s.

  3. This is the thing, though: The Trib is conservative! They always endorse the Republican when it matters most (and pick some ineffectual stooge as their “balanced” Democrat).

They went after this story because it had all the appearances of something potentially juicy. Just like every other media outfit.

I guess when you’re the Leader, though, and you have a president who was on Jack!’s team, and you have some time to blow, and everyone looks like they’re to the left of you, and you’ve got a vendetta…

  4. Oh, cute. Andrew “Bareback” Sullivan is his usual, bile-inducing manipulative self, here: (oh, and can you PLEASE allow at least SOME HTML in your comments? Sigh…

(pretend that there are blockquote tags here):

MORE ON THE TRIB: Something I didn’t know, but should have. One of Jack Ryan’s rivals in the Republican primary was one Andy McKenna Jr. Ryan beat him. Then there’s this: “His father is Andy McKenna Sr., chairman of Schwarz, a minority investor in the Chicago Bears, a former chairman of both the Cubs and White Sox and a former director of Tribune Co., which also owns the Chicago Tribune.” Hmmm. (My italics). Maybe it’s not a huge surprise that the Trib exposed Ryan’s private life and will leave Kerry’s alone.

  5. Hmmmm….I thought I did allow it–I’ll fix that.

And yes, you are correct, the Trib is conservative though has I think a very good editorial page for making one think. They just aren’t social conservatives of the type the Leader would like so they are part of the liberal media conspiracy. I’m with you–this was a ‘good’ story so the media went after it.

I think we can safely say McKenna wasn’t the reason for this, but if we want to play seven degrees of separation…..

(and I’m not a fan of the bareback references)

  6. Yeah, sorry about the bareback thing. It’s the only taunt for Andrew Sullivan I have so far, though. Give it a year or two; I’ll come up with something as delicious as Blagorgeous.
