Kos got it a bit wrong about replacing Hyde if he steps down. A party has 8 days to replace a candidate if there’s a vacancy after certification. If the vacancy occurs less than 15 days before the election, then it can’t be filled.
My guess is that Hyde’s health will not cause him to give up his place on the ballot. With Bush and Keyes bringing down the ticket, and with the acrimony on the GOP side, Hyde is their best candidate. He may resign and force a special election, but I don’t think he’d voluntarily give up his spot on the Nov. 2 ballot.
I hope that Mr. Hyde has a healthy, long and immediate retirement.
If his health is that bad, he should, well, walk as fast as he can out that door and into retirement. The medical team that operated on President Clinton yesterday were all talking on NPR this morning about how just campaigning was likely to be too stressful for someone in the president’s weakened condition–and he’s not even 60 years old. Hyde is what, 90 years older than God? Deciding to tough it out one last time so his party doesn’t wind up a complete laughingstock at this election would be a noble gesture of self-sacrifice–but that sacrifice might be literal. I may not like the man, but I wouldn’t want to have him keel over in the well of the House because he didn’t take his doctors’ advice about taking it easy.
Kos didn’t get it wrong about replacing Henry Hyde on the ballot….I did.
I was the “reader” in question. That error was based on the experience of my own campaign for DuPage County Coroner.
My original opponent dropped out in June. The rules stated that his replacement had to be named by Sept. 1st. I have since learned that the Congressional races have different rules.
Beyond that, though, I stand FIRMLY by the comments in my email to Kos.
