Right Out of Blagojevich’s Playbook

Kids as shields:

Let’s be clear about what’s happening here. Overwhelmingly, reporters are pressing eminently reasonable questions — her role in troopergate, her lack of experience, her connections to the AIP, her history of earmarking and lobbyists, etc. Meanwhile, the McCain campaign is going absolutely non-stop about Palin’s daughter. It is unmistakable.

Ummm…other than a couple non-front page diaries, this isn’t even getting much in the blogosphere.  I could care less about the her daughter or her son or so forth, but putting this out instead of answering the hundreds of questions while Palin is in seclusion tells me the campaign is desperate to change the subject.

Just Weird

From Eric

But, prompted by an item on Ben Smith’s blog at Politico, I found in Nexis the following portion of an  interview Palin gave in June, 2005, to Joseph Ditzeler of the Anchorage Daily News:

Q: I noticed there was a new business license acquired in the Mat-Su* under your name.

A: Rouge Cou, it’s a classy way of saying redneck. It’s a French word, rouge is red, cou is neck. It’s for marketing and consulting, in case I wanted to go that route, I’d have my ducks all lined up and have a business license. I just was granted that business license.

Q: You’re not actively pursuing a business, it’s setting aside the rights, the name, rather?

A: It was to, again, get my ducks lined up, because I would like to, with some of the endeavors that I have going on right now, there comes a time when one desires to be paid for them!

Durbin Steps on the Message

Not so hot of an argument:

“It is dramatically different,” said Durbin, a Democrat from Springfield. “It isn’t even close.”

Nor does Durbin agree with the characterization that Palin’s experience as governor means she is more prepared than the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden to take over as vice president or, if needed, as president.

“How you could possibly draw a parallel between that experience as Alaska governor and being a vice president or even president of the United States is a stretch, as far as I’m concerned,” he said

Rich covers the basic problem well:

That’s just a blatant insult to Alaska. Yes, it has fewer residents than Lake County. But remember what Barack Obama said just last week in Denver? “Change doesn’t come from Washington, it comes to Washington.” This tack by Durbin just doesn’t jibe with last week’s message.

But it’s deeper than that.  It’s not that she’s just the Governor of Alaska, it’s that she appears to have no background on foreign policy whatsoever, no background on defense issues, no background on anything besides social conservative issues and oil.  Being Governor of Alaska could be a fine place to springboard from using it as a tool to learn those issues and expand one’s background. Palin has done nothing of the sort.

Double Standards Not So Good With Judges

When you operate a group with ties to violence, it’s not out of line to point out you operate a group with ties to violence:

A Kane County judge Tuesday threw out significant portions of a defamation lawsuit brought by an anti-abortion group against Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Eric Scheidler and the Pro-Life Action League filed the lawsuit in Circuit Court last fall. Planned Parenthood of Illinois president Steve Trombley was accused of defaming the group in written statements to the Aurora City Council and in an ad in a local newspaper, saying the Pro-Life Action League had a “history of violence.”

Judge Judith Brawka granted Planned Parenthood’s request to dismiss the suit under the Illinois Citizen Participation Act. The law, which took effect a little more than a year ago, is meant to “protect and encourage” public participation in government.

Leah Bruno, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood, said the judge’s ruling affirms what her client has said all along: that political speech should be protected.

I’ve covered the background of the Pro-Life Action League before

And I’ve written of their threats to sue Twombley and Planned Parenthood here and here.

It’s Not A Canned Speech That Matters

It’s when will Palin submit to full scale interviews with the press.  She’s a fairly good speaker and giving a canned speech isn’t going to be hard for her–the telling issue is that the McCain camp has put her in seclusion until after the speech–and even then, when the interviews might come are an open question.

Why? You ask?
I think explaining what she is doing filing an ethics complaint against herself would be all sorts of fun to explain.

Gamechanger indeed!

Consistency…Just Not Valued Anymore

Ben Smith has some fun with the McCain cries of sexism:

During the primary Sarah Palin chided Hillary Clinton for complaining about sexism.

“She does herself a disservice to even mention it, really,” Palin said. “When I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism, or maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think, ‘Man, that doesn’t do us any good, women in politics, or women in general, trying to progress this country,'” Palin said. “I don’t think it bodes well for her.”

She, or at least her advisers in McCain-land, seem to have discarded this principle today, along with years of Republican complaints about identity politics and political correctness.

Go read the rest, but I think the point is pretty clear.
