The War Against Contraception

It’s really not a joke that the right wing is attacking contraception, not just abortion.

The store’s head pharmacist, who knew Noesen’s concerns, had agreed to personally fill such prescriptions, but he was out of town for the weekend. Renz asked where else she could get the prescription filled. Noesen declined to tell her. Renz went to the local Wal-Mart, but when the pharmacist there attempted to transfer her prescription over the phone, Noesen refused.

So, not only would this man not dispense contraception, he wouldn’t allow the patient to have the prescription transferred.

Is it getting through how dangerous this is? It’s not just about personal conscience, it’s about substituting a far right wing view of contraception for a woman and her doctor.

Want more evidence, Illinois Family Institute is now crusading against a compromise to make Plan B available to adults without a prescription even after the FDA found it safe.

  1. Pharmacists who won’t fill prescriptions should be fired because they are not doing there job. Any store would fire a clerk that refused to complete sales unhealthy food to fat people or toy guns to children out of principle. These pharmacists are doing a lousy job in their current post and if they find dispensing birth control morally objectionable then maybe they should be looking into a new line of work.

  2. The Christian News Network is continuing to flog the issue, bringing up that President Bush supports making Plan B over the counter for those over 18. A spokeswoman for an anti Plan B group lists all the possible complications that Plan B can cause, from heart attacks to strokes to hypertension and other health problems. She also opposes making Plan B OTC because someone over 18 could buy the drug and give it to a 13 year old (I don’t know what difference having to have scrip would make on this scenario)
Finally, she lists the 3 ways Plan B prevents contraception. In the third, she states “and this prevents the embryo from attaching to the wall of the uterus, keeping it from getting needed nutrients the same as if we were starved”. She then says “Killing an embryo is an abortion; killing a fertilized egg is killing a human being”
These are the people whom sentient beings have to contend with.

  3. The thing that most amazes me is that of these 2 “hero” pharmacists, one is a liar (claimed they were out) and the other a person who couldn’t even abide by the rules of his profession (refused to return the scrip let alone refer). Couldn’t refusing to return the script be construed as theft?

  4. In 1989, the pro-lifers lost their grip on Congress when Congressmen switched their votes on the “rape, incest, life” legislation when relating the issue to their spouses and daughters. It seems to me that this is far more odious and the same successful argument ought to be put to Congressmen i.e “Your daughter needs emergency contraception, the pharmacist refuses — would you want him fired, stripped of his license or given a medal?’

  5. I can’t believe these jerks are framing the issue as one of their “rights.” Why do they have the “right” to interfere with medicine prescribed to someone else?
