Durbin Steps on the Message

Not so hot of an argument:

“It is dramatically different,” said Durbin, a Democrat from Springfield. “It isn’t even close.”

Nor does Durbin agree with the characterization that Palin’s experience as governor means she is more prepared than the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden to take over as vice president or, if needed, as president.

“How you could possibly draw a parallel between that experience as Alaska governor and being a vice president or even president of the United States is a stretch, as far as I’m concerned,” he said

Rich covers the basic problem well:

That’s just a blatant insult to Alaska. Yes, it has fewer residents than Lake County. But remember what Barack Obama said just last week in Denver? “Change doesn’t come from Washington, it comes to Washington.” This tack by Durbin just doesn’t jibe with last week’s message.

But it’s deeper than that.  It’s not that she’s just the Governor of Alaska, it’s that she appears to have no background on foreign policy whatsoever, no background on defense issues, no background on anything besides social conservative issues and oil.  Being Governor of Alaska could be a fine place to springboard from using it as a tool to learn those issues and expand one’s background. Palin has done nothing of the sort.

Double Standards Not So Good With Judges

When you operate a group with ties to violence, it’s not out of line to point out you operate a group with ties to violence:

A Kane County judge Tuesday threw out significant portions of a defamation lawsuit brought by an anti-abortion group against Planned Parenthood of Illinois.

Eric Scheidler and the Pro-Life Action League filed the lawsuit in Circuit Court last fall. Planned Parenthood of Illinois president Steve Trombley was accused of defaming the group in written statements to the Aurora City Council and in an ad in a local newspaper, saying the Pro-Life Action League had a “history of violence.”

Judge Judith Brawka granted Planned Parenthood’s request to dismiss the suit under the Illinois Citizen Participation Act. The law, which took effect a little more than a year ago, is meant to “protect and encourage” public participation in government.

Leah Bruno, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood, said the judge’s ruling affirms what her client has said all along: that political speech should be protected.

I’ve covered the background of the Pro-Life Action League before

And I’ve written of their threats to sue Twombley and Planned Parenthood here and here.

It’s Not A Canned Speech That Matters

It’s when will Palin submit to full scale interviews with the press.  She’s a fairly good speaker and giving a canned speech isn’t going to be hard for her–the telling issue is that the McCain camp has put her in seclusion until after the speech–and even then, when the interviews might come are an open question.

Why? You ask?
I think explaining what she is doing filing an ethics complaint against herself would be all sorts of fun to explain.

Gamechanger indeed!

What’s Abundantly Clear about Gustav

The Corps of Engineers is no where near as ready as they claim. The claim before Katrina was that they could handle a Category 3. Katrina hit New Orleans as a Category 3 with the brunt of the storm hitting Mississippi.

The Corps claimed again now they were really ready to handle a Category 3 yet a Category 2 came ashore 60 miles west of New Orleans and the city barely avoided being flooded.  Obviously federal, state, and local governments did much better this time in general, but the Corps, as it historically has, is making crap up about how ready they are.

Stop Being Mean to John McCain

By asking him questions and stuff:

This afternoon, anchorman Wolf Blitzer announced on air that McCain’s planned interview with Larry King tonight had been canceled by the campaign. Blitzer said McCain aides complained that Brown had gone “over the line” in her grilling of Bounds.

McCain campaign spokeswoman Maria Comella later explained the cancellation with this sharply worded statement:

“After a relentless refusal by certain on-air reporters to come to terms with John McCain’s selection of Alaska’s sitting governor as our party’s nominee for vice president, we decided John McCain’s time would be better served elsewhere.”

When that poor sap from South Carolina couldn’t name one Obama accomplishment–did he boycott MSNBC?  No.

Today’s Tosser: Illinois Review

What if your 17 year old daughter were to tell you she’s pregnant? Barack Obama said in March 2008:

“I wouldn’t want my daughter to be punished with a baby . . . “

Vice Presidential GOP candidate Sarah Palin and her husband Todd’s announcement today that their 17 year old daughter Bristol is 5 months pregnant:

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

Reuters reports that McCain knew about the situation last week when he announced Sarah Palin as his running mate, deciding the situation did not disqualify the 44 year old governor in any way.

Full Context of Obama Quote:

“This is a very difficult issue, and I understand sort of the passions on both sides of the issue,” he said. “I have two precious daughters — they are miracles.”

But politicians must trust women to make the right decisions for themselves, he said.

“This is an example where good people can disagree,” the Illinois senator said. “The question then is, are there areas that we can agree to that everybody can get behind? We can all agree that we want to reduce teen pregnancies. We can all agree that we want to make sure that adoption is a viable option.”

The exchange appeared to be prompted by Obama’s earlier comments that he does not favor abstinence-only education, but rather comprehensive sexual education that includes information on abstinence and birth control.

“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

IOW, he wants his children to know enough how to prevent pregnancy and avoid STDs so the situation doesn’t even get to the point the Palin family is in.  Getting pregnant at a young age isn’t just a problem of not having sex, but also creating a greater risk of contracting a disease.  Hence, Obama wants his children to have all the information in case they make a bad decision.
