Mr. Crane might be a bit out of touch:
Congressman Phil Crane’s eyes dart around the packed Metra train as reporters sit nearby, waiting to discuss his railroad expansion plan.
He leans forward, then takes a stub of paper off the back of the bench in front of him. He turns it over in his hands.
“Now, what’s this?” Crane asks.
An assistant, laughing nervously, fills him in: “That’s your train ticket.”
This moment during his campaign for re-election in the 8th Congressional District crystallized both what critics say is Crane’s major weakness and what he says is his greatest strength.
Reports are that the RNCC is bringing in a lot of Congressional staffers to work the race. Good. They aren’t nearly as effective as the local group Bean has.
Priceless.
Ummm…
Has he ever ridden Metra or Amtrak?
What about context clues? What piece of paper would be common on a train? Advertising for mobile phones?
125 congressional staffers, that is.
This is way off-topic, but I have a question for ArchPundit (or anyone else). So the deal is this — election in a few days, and I don’t know whom to vote for! I plan on voting straight ticket, but there are always nonpartisan positions like judges or whatever that just confuse me. Can someone link me to a good, liberal endorsement list for local Chicago candidates? I could probably find something through Google, but I wouldn’t know what to trust — heck, I only learned the Trip was Republican a few weeks ago.
I assisted with voting at a nursing home today and one of the residents wanted so much to vote for Bean against Crane — unfortunately for the resident, we weren’t in that district.
Anno,
The voters’ guide on this page — http://www.iviipo.org/index.htm — is probably a good place to start, although I disagree with some of their judicial assessments. If I lived in Chicago as well as worked there, I would vote YES for R. Billik, and NO for E. Turkington, S. McDunn, D. Jones, L. Santiago.
Hope it helps.
So-Called “Austin Mayor”
Al Hunt said on today’s “Capitol Gang” that Crane will lose…he said it with great certainty.
Well, I am not so sure. I think Bean’s ads are better — and playing better — than Crane’s, but there do seem to be a lot of people/sheep who if told a candidate would vote for the death tax (excuse me estate taxes) would make a vote on that basis, despite the overwhelming probability that it will never impact them. I personally think the whole tax, tax, tax matra gets boring, but it sure worked in the past.
…bob novak agreed with hunt…do they know something about Crane’s demise? could be the national repubs are writing this one off…
When in doubt vote “no” on judicial retention.
Even the bad judges never get dumped, so I wouldn’t worry about accidentally purging a good judge.
