How Ugly Will the General Election for Governor Be?

Pretty ugly from this quote from Pete Giangreco:

Pete Giangreco, campaign consultant to Blagojevich “in case he decides to run,” said Blagojevich is focused on governing and not on his potential Republican opponent next year. But Giangreco gave a hint of what the Democrat’s strategy might be against either of the most prominent Republicans, attempting to tie them to fellow Republicans George Ryan and Tom DeLay, the controversial U.S. House Majority Leader.

“Topinka … was first mate on the Titanic” as treasurer when Ryan was governor, Giangreco said. He chided LaHood as “a staunch defender of Tom DeLay.”

And on the Republican side, I think we can just put the phrase “chicago democrat” in the same category as lockbox in the 2000 Presidential election.

You don’t just plug in your clock when you want to know what time it is

Rick Santorum delivers up another gem in introducing legislation to stop the National Weather Service from providing weather information–get this–for free to those on the net. How dare they?

The pressure is coming from private companies that provide such information. The point made in the title is from one of the systerms’s administrators who points out if you want to have the Weather Service predict dangerous weather, they also have to predict the weather when it’s not so dangerous.

So the practical effect of the bill would keep taxpayers from accessing the information even though the Weather Service would still be generating it.

No one asked if you could FOIA it.

Sweet’s “Blog”

I can only hope she doesn’t get one because between her and Miller doing the national and the state, there wouldn’t be much left (Eric Zorn isn’t only obsessed with politics…so it isn’t quite the same).

Seriously, I’d love to read a blog by her–my sense is the things she has to leave out due to space currently would be better than her columns now. It would be a great move for the Sun-Times.

Another point of the column should be taken by bloggers to–how hard it is to do regular reporting. While being a watchdog for the media is one of the best things blogs do, I often get the sense that the difficulty of the job isn’t fully understood.

Delivering As Promised

Melissa Bean is working to ban oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes, as she promised repeatedly in 2004.

At 12:45 p.m., in a basement room in the Capitol, I am at a press conference with Emanuel, Bean and Schakowsky, plus two Michigan Democratic lawmakers. The Illinoisans’ districts span the lakefront from the Wisconsin border to Armitage Avenue in Chicago. The group tried and failed Tuesday to attach an amendment to the pending energy bill, a sweeping piece of legislation, to ban oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes. They said they will try again. There are 16 rigs offshore in Michigan.

Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Race

Jan Schakowsky is in a race for the number 4 spot on the House Dems side in DC. Here’s what I’ve gathered on the race. Joe Crowley from NY-7 is the primary opponent and according to the The Hill’s article is close with 32 public supporters compared to 38 supporters for Schakowsky on the day before publication. He released a few more names and probably is just in the lead right now, though no one is reporting it so I can’t give you a hard count. John Larson, CT-1 , is the other guy in the race, but hasn’t released names and may well pull out. Where his supporters will go is important to the outcome.

The key liability for Crowley appears to be his support for the bankruptcy bill.

Schakowsky, as I’ve discussed before, has strained relations with some in the Illinois Party, but is relatively popular in DC amongst Democrats. She’s raised a ton of cash for DCCC and is close to Pelosi.

I know there was some hope she’d take over DCCC back when Matsui was in charge, but Rahm’s high profile and aggressiveness was the more natural fit from what I understand.

My sense, and it isn’t infallible, is that DC Democrats are looking for aggressiveness and in terms of policy issues that are up for discussion, she probably fits better in the caucus right now. On the flip side, Crowley has some help in having a larger NY Dem delegation.

Clinton Impeachment Payback for Nixon Impeachment?

WTF? I didn’t even believe this when I heard it. I had to see Hyde say it.

You can at ABC 7’s site.

UPDATE:

Here’s the full quote:

“I can’t say it wasn’t. But I also thought that the Republican Party should stand for something, and if we walked away from this, no matter how difficult, we could be accused of shirking our duty,” said Hyde.

It’s bizarre even in that context, though WLS overplayed it in the headline and was changing the story even as I put up the original. Note, the above link is to the video which contains the entire statement.

‘’Has the Internet become the devil’s workshop?

Beautiful

”We’ve got Justice Kennedy writing decisions based upon international law, not the Constitution of the United States? That’s just outrageous,” DeLay said. ”And not only that, but he said in session that he does his own research on the Internet? That is just incredibly outrageous.”

”Has the Internet become the devil’s workshop?” said Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat. ”Is it some infernal machine now that needs to be avoided by all right-thinking Americans? What is Mr. DeLay trying to say, as he is stretching to lash out at judges who happen to disagree with his political point of view?”
