Hastert has been known to show up at one of the better Sushi restaurants in DC so him wanting to be Ambassador to Japan seems very possible. He likes his food–and no I’m not making fun of that–I do too.

The possibility of Chris Lauzen, CPA and Obie in a primary together is fun on its own.
A special election is a free shot for anyone. Hopefully that would bring Chapa LaVia out on the D side. It would be a shame for the strongest Dems in the district to pass and leave us with the standard “some guy” candidacy.
other point: I recall a 10 way R primary when Porter retired that gave the world Mark Kirk.
The drawing power of that free shot is bound to be strong especially for Rs.
The list of D possibilities is skinny.
Hastert used to teach english in Japan. Given the importance of the region, having a former Speaker in that position might not be bad. I think fmr. VP Mondale is a good example of that.
Sumo wrestlers often have hot girlfriends in Japan.
Don’t rule out Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner to run for Hastert’s seat. Weisner can work with both sides, and is a capable fundraiser.
