Illinois Congressional Races

Cegelis Interview: Gun Control

Okay, I had some problems with the audio, so I had to work from notes. Not as complete as I’d like, but here goes:

Christine favors an assault weapon ban. I also asked her about the Illinois schema of gun regulation that involves everyone who operates a firearm being required to have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, background checks, and 24/72 hour waiting periods for gun purchases. Specifically I asked if she would support extending that to a national level and she responded that she tends to see that issue how Howard Dean did–each state is capable of determining their own gun laws to fit the needs of that state.

The Best Congressman The 11th District Ever Had

Ed Markey (MA-07)

I’m not kidding either. While El Geraldo has been tramping around the world getting married to genocidal dicator’s daughters, it appears he’s been letting things slip around the District.

Exelon is seeking a renewal from the NRC for Dresden II and III reactors near Morris. In 2004 the Radiation Public Health Project pointed out evidence that Grundy County had seen increases in the incidence of child cancer rates in the mid to late 1990s and several people in the community approached their legislative leaders for help. The Tribune reported on the issue in a brief article in January of 2004.

Constituents approached Weller about the issue in an attempt to figure out the cause of the increases and try to determine if Exelon was at fault. Weller and staff ignored them.

So they kept trying to find help and it turns out Ed Markey of Massachusetts helped them out with a series of inquiries to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. I’m trying to get ahold of his correspondence now, but Weller was absent.

The story turns more problematic today when we now know that Exelon had several tritium leaks that were never reported to state authorities and only informally reported to the NRC. The information we have now from Exelon indicates the tritium in the groundwater isn’t at unsafe levels though it is above typical levels for the area, but the information surrounding the tritium leaks is scarce.

These sorts of cases are very difficult to sort out–environmental exposure to cancer causing agents is fraught with difficulties. I’d say it is safe to say there isn’t enough evidence to determine the cause of the increased incidence in childhood cancers for the period, but it sure would be nice to have had someone looking into it–especially since Exelon wasn’t being forthecoming to the public. However, given the elevated incidence was known two years ago and constituents were asking for help, where was Jerry?

And why the hell did Ed Markey, a Congressman from Massachusetts have to go to bat for Jerry Weller’s constituents?

But don’t worry, now that it’s a big deal, Jerry’s on the scene. He’s now demanding action from Exelon to pay for the costs from the leaks.

Two years later after it made the news. Not only that, but Obama was ahead of him on the issue after he found out about it–and he wasn’t even in office in 2004. More later–I’m working on getting the Markey correspondence.

Let’s Make Ciro Rodriguez the John Sullivan of Texas

Leo’s got a post up at several sites singing the praises of John Sullivan who is challenging Lipper the Lessoer AKA Skeletor in IL-03’s primary. More fun is Jeff Berkowitz talking to both of them this week on the Illinois Channel–even I get that down here on cable access.

What someone needs to ask the guy is who did he support in the 2000 Presidential Election. I’m sure he’ll make it up given he appears to be making it up where he voted in the last several elections. My understanding was he was quite fond of Pat Buchanan in 2000.

Jeff’s interview is incredibly damning. It’s just brutal. Let me make a point here–while someone could claim to be a resident of their home state while in grad school I changed my registration in 1995 after moving to Missouri in the fall of 1995 to attend Washington University for my PhD in political science. I damn sure know when I’ve voted and when I haven’t and I can tell you the special elections I’ve missed–in fact I missed the August Primary in Missouri last year because I was in the field all day (yeah, should have voted early–I know). Why can I do that? Because I talk about politics nearly every day and when I was teaching, I talked about it to students nearly every day meaning I was constantly using real world examples to illustrate theoretical points.

The man is a Congressional Scholar–he’d remember who he voted for in a Congressional Race and where he did it. In fact, his book is on Congressional Communication so he’d be paying attention to the contact he’d have with his Representatives through franking and other means.

I do know some political scientists who don’t vote–more than you might think, but that’s not typical. The whole not knowing where you are registered is nonsense. The way to check this all out is to check out Durham County, North Carolina and Knox County, Tennessee. If he ever registered in either place and then voted in Illinois again after that without reregistering in Illinois, we have voter fraud.

This is an important one–if you can help, go here.

Need to feel good about yourself

Go here, and donate what you can.

It’s important.

If you can’t donate, you can also volunteer. While I’m not sure how hard Madigan will get out there for Lipinski, Madigan and the elder are long time allies. Madigan can call up ground troops in a second that dwarf most political operations—usually that’s a good thing. John will need all the help he can get.

I know most of the volume is in the 6th, but frankly there are three good people running for that seat and it’s a tougher seat to win then this is to retain. If you want to fight over who’s more liberal or progressive, this is the District in which to do it. This is an easy seat to retain with a Dem. Worse, if Ethics reform is the issue de jour, getting your seat from your Daddy who dumped some hump on the Republican ballot so you’d have no real competition is sort of a problem.

John had a disappointing 4th quarter, but if there was ever a good fight to be had in a primary this is it. For all the piss and vinegar being used in other races, this one is a clear choice for Democrats–it’s a 59% Kerry District represented by not just a pro-life Democrat (there are many of those and I respect them), but a guy who is socially conservative across the board in a district that is quite Democratic. Did I mention, Lipinski is just a crod to boot?

Normally, I’m tough on candidates who have bad fundraising quarters, but John is in a situation where Dan Lipinski may face a perfect storm by the primary with disgust over how he got the position and a general unhappiness over his positions. Let’s put John in a position to take advantage of that situation.
