Nice Dodge–can you use that line up until November 1st?

Thompson told reporters today that he thinks it’s sad that the party could not find someone from Illinois because there were a number of people who were willing to do so.

The popular former governor also says he has not endorsed Keyes or agreed to campaign for him because he does not know enough about his positions.

I think the theme of the Republicans this year is “unfortunate”

  1. I’m still wondering whose bad idea this was? Could they have made a worse choice?

Maybe Topinka is trying to discredit the conservative wing of the party?

  2. Clearly the steering wheel has broken off the GOP Sedan de Ville. I know that if I were Judy Baar Topinka, I’d get out of the car, hand the wheel to the wingnuts who’ve been in the backseat screaming that they could do a better job without resorting to compromises like slowing for stop signs and signals and bendy roads, and then wish them a pleasant trip over the cliff. But I’d also pray they didn’t run me over on the way to the precipice.

So far that hasn’t happened, but they did pick up a crazy-ass hitchhiker from Maryland right away.

  3. Topinka, I suspect, tried everything she could to keep raeactionary Keyes off the ballot. Same with Thompson and Edgar. Remember, Edgar just says “no comment” about Keyes. I watched Jim Thompson fidget like crazy yesterday on the news and he clearly said the only GOP type who could win in IL is “a MODERATE.” Meaning he knows Keyes will lose but being an ex guv, he couldn’t bring himself to openly say it straight, KEYES WILL LOSE. He also said there is no more a liberal wing of the GOP. When big names like Thompson , Edgar, etc., won’t endorse their own party’s nominee, you can see some of them at least are still HONEST. Kudos to these moderates and liberal GOP types. I hope they keep their honesty and show zero support for Keyes; their silence on support ing Keyes is loud.

  4. How can Judy or Jim or ANYONE get behind a candidate who says crap like this (pointed out by Josh Marshall):

“And I think that it is a disservice to the people of this state to allow [Obama] to cower in timidity, and before the real historic challenge that is before us in this campaign.”

“Cower in timidity”?!?!?! Who TALKS like that? I think Keyes needs to do a little less preening in pridefulness, myself. Also, a little less wallowing in studidity.

“He’s going to find 98 people from out of state. . . . If he’s not ready for me, he’s not ready for the Senate of the United States.”

See … Obama … never having encountered ACTUAL non-Illinoisans … umm … oh, it’s a JOKE! HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Judy, you need to take a strong stand, NOW. As in retire as state chair. As in maybe even switch parties. As in, don’t EVER show your face at a gay pride rally again if you go along with this farce.

  5. I can’t wait to hear what the Visiting Professor has to say about New Jersey Gov. McGreevey. Oy vay in advance.

  6. From the Illinois Leader: State Party Chairman Judy Baar-Topinka greeted the crowd [in Arlington Heights on Sunday] on behalf of the IL GOP and in support of Alan Keyes, “a former Reagan administration official,” and then left the premises immediately after she spoke.

… I’d love the text of that greeting!

And Jeff … is there something we should know about Keyes perhaps not getting on the ballot?!

Finally … Best! Strawman! Ever!!! [Also from the Leader]

Dr. Keyes ran on an Illinois ballot in 2000 for president. It’s not like he’s never run for office in Illinois.
