A Veteran of Long Nights

  1. The last day of the Election I was with the Claypool people — I really owed it to them seeing as though so many of them had come to our meetups in the preceeding months.

They put me to phonebanking first at Montrose and Lincoln and then downtown. I’m completely knocked out but I did manage to put in an hour at the Election Day Party before calling it a night.

Note: for the first hour, while the Claypool people were still on their way, Commissioner Mike Quigley was master of ceremonies. He really put his all into this race. The guy’s great.

  2. Thoughts on the Claypool Election: When I heard on WBEZ that the Stroger people were banking on the Southwest Side of Chicago, I thought that might be a good sign for Claypool.

Stroger did have official backing from a number of unions, but unless you’re personally working for Cook County, you don’t really have a dog in the race. And while all the talk was about the Stroger signs on the south side, it’s not like there were no Claypool signs as well — particularly in the 19th Ward.

Also, even among Stroger supporters, the fact that the guy is sitting in a hospital bed and the state of his health is unknown — that must have an effect on their willingness to go out and vote for him. I mean, sure they’ll say they’re still for him — he’s in a hospital after all and it might seem “unkind” to say otherwise — but off-mike and off-camera, they might have just enough qualms to give Claypool the advantage.
