Trying to Make Sense of This

Austin-Mayor makes a very good effort to find a reason the GOP is seriously considering Keyes.

My only issue here is, have we seen the Illinois GOP actually show any evidence of that level of thought in the last few months?

  1. Austin Mayor makes a good argument, but if it’s true I think that the GOP underestimates Barack’s nimbleness as a debater. In any case, nothing Keyes baited Bush into saying has been used to hang him, although maybe the multi-candidate format prevented that.

My guess is that Keyes is in the hunt because he has experience running with no money, relying on saying eccentric things to get free media notice. This, perhaps, could raise his standing with the social conservatives enough to help save some down-ballot races. This is not exactly probable, but considering the alternatives the GOP is facing, I think it’s possible.

I certainly wouldn’t put it past the GOP to plan ahead for Barack’s ascendence, but that sounds like a longshot, too.

  2. It’s an interesting theory, but I’m skeptical. Keyes has too large of an ego to be an effective straw man.

My theory is that the GOP is like a gambler who’s been losing all night. If only the roulette wheel will stop at 27-Red, I can make up all my losses for the night! The delusion that the GOP will cash in on a long-shot got some additional fuel from the Mike Ditka frenzy.

When Ryan dropped out, they should have done the sensible thing and found an articulate candidate who can respond to Obama, and funded him/her with enough money to pay campaign overhead — but no TV, and promised a nice big reward for the suicide mission. They weren’t going to win no matter what — there goal all along should have been to avoid embarassment.

    Ooops.
