COURIC: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy? Instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
PALIN: That’s why I say, I like ever American I’m speaking with were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the tax payers looking to bailout.
But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up the economy– Helping the — Oh, it’s got to be about job creation too. Shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americas. A
And trade we’ve got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive scary thing. But 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. ALl those things under the umbrella of job creation.
This bailout is a part of that.
One of my various part time employments from time to time is grading AP exams for the Government and Politics Exam. Sometimes students who clearly don’t know what they are talking about back into a few points by hitting accidentally on the points in the rubric. The above does not even do that.
In this case, as the kids say: EPIC FAIL!
It’s just as bad in the transcript as it was on teevee. To her credit, though, this makes her answer on foreign policy sound articulate and inspiring, even.
The best part seeing the video clip is watching how hard Katie Couric is trying not to roll her eyes.
I graded AP Gov exams one year (2005) and no doubt Palin’s responses would have gotten passed around the table for a chuckle.
I can hear it now:
“Did she read the prompt? I don’t think she understood the prompt!”
“there’s no linkage here”
“Answer the damn question!”
“…the economy–Helping the — Oh, it’s’ got to be about job creation too… The bailout is under the umbrella of job creation! Bwwwaaaahahahaha!!!”
Maybe Gwen Ifill will ask Palin about fiscal vs. monetary policy, and then we can judge her understanding against a control group of 100,000+ high school students from the 2008 exam.
I have to wonder how much of America’s reaction to Sarah Palin is colored by Miss Teen South Carolina…
Had the “such as US Americans …maps! …South Africa!” speech not happened a year ago would the “frame” be different somehow?
I am sorry to say I missed the Couric/Palin interview. I am so looking forward to the VP debate. Too bad there is only going to be one.
I am thinking that the McCain handlers cannot let Palin out loose in public with the media as it is becoming more and more obvious that she is not ready to become the next VP. She must be having information overload trying to get up to debate speed. But alas, you can only cram so much you-know-what into a 5 pound bag.
