why it should be the policy of the state to deny beer, but not guns, to a teenager

I agree with the Trib—legal adults should be able to drink beer.

And actually 18 year olds could buy long guns in the State of Illinois before this bill. They couldn’t get the FOID card without parental permission. This is a very small change and really of no substance. While I’m for gun control including 1 handgun a month and closing loopholes at gun shows, gangbangers aren’t getting FOIDs. Hunters are and having a parental signature for the FOID card is silly for an adult. Not to mention, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun.

  1. I think there should be a revokeable drinking license that one could earn with a test at 18. It could be an add-on to the drivers license. Be caught driving with any detectable amount of alcohol in your system and wham no license, driver or drinker.

  2. Ralph,

Under the new law, 1) it’s not *your* gun it’s the young adult’s gun (purchaced using his or her FOID card), and 2) the young adult is, in fact, *an adult*, i.e. 18 or older.

Now its time to work on laws that would allow those young adults to gamble, drink beer and see strippers.

But if you want to treat young people like children, work on ending the laws that allow them to be prosecuted as adults.

    Anon.
