Brilliant show by the ILGOP, by the way. Turn away Oberweis and spend six weeks falling over themselves to get every disinterested has been, never was and not gonna be, only to get back to Oberweis.
Smooth. I am looking forward to the sequel; GOP Keystone Cops II; JBT runs for Gov.
If it is Oberweis, I can believe in God again (damn you Saxby Chambliss).
It’s like when you were 20 and went out on a bender and at the end of the night you stand around with your friends arguing about who was supposed to be the designated driver. Oberweis might be the most sober right now. How scary is that?
from trib article: “Those still on the list to be interviewed today included former primary contenders Oberweis and Retired Air Force Gen. John Borling, who finished sixth in the primary; Norm Hill, who finished seventh and showed up uninvited today; and Chirinjeev Kathuria, who finished in eighth and last place.
The other hopefuls were:
— Former national drug-control official Andrea Grubb Barthwell; [i thought she was gonesville]
— Conservative businessman John Cox, who already is Republican candidate for Cook County recorder of deeds;
— Martin Ozinga III, president of Ozinga Bros. Inc., an Alsip concrete company;
— Terry Barnich, former chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission and former chief counsel under Gov. James Thompson;
— Steve Burgauer, the 2002 Libertarian Party of Illinois candidate for U.S. Senate;
— Andy Martin, who changed his name from Anthony Martin-Trigona, a perennial candidate in Illinois and Florida elections, and
— Daniel Vovak, a Florida resident who ran against George W. Bush in the Iowa primaries and whose chief claim to fame is that he wears an 18th Century-style powdered wig. [i kid you not]
Can we get a Keyes-Nugent co-nomination? I just want to see them tag-team debate with Obama. Nugent could answer questions on why putting assault rifles on the streets is good crime-control policy and Keyes could explain why rolling back women’s suffrage will result in a stronger Union.
It’s inside information from a reliable and well placed source. I agree with all of the observations about that pick. But my source told me about it with an embarassed laugh, so I’m presuming the GOPsters know that the candidacy is a joke as well. They’re frustrated as hell with Obama-mania – not a gol-durned thing they can do about it, neither! The GOP insiders still think Ditka would have had the best chance of winning…
I guess it’s because we’re having a heat wave here and everyone wants the free ice cream.
Would the Nuge pass a drug test? Thought not.
If they need high profiles — hey, how about one of the Osmonds or Scott Baio, oh so popular with the youth. Isn’t Drew Carey a repug? Plus he’s from a swing state. oh, wow — shit, i just gave them good advice again.
Must watch what I say at all times.
I heard the cleaning lady of the ILGOP offices was going to retire and return to the old country, but she offered to stick around if they wanted to run her.
Nugent’s not going to run but he’s providing the theme song……..it’s a Free for All.
You know it’s sad when they are interviewing our Libertarian candidate for Senate two years ago, Burgauer, who didn’t even get our nomination again this year.
Associated Press is reporting that Topinka has narrowed it to 2 — Keyes and Barthwell.
Is this bizarre or what?
“Two Finalists Named for Republican U.S. Senate Ballot in Illinois
By Maura Kelly Lannan Associated Press Writer
Published: Aug 3, 2004
CHICAGO (AP) – A nearly six-week search for a new Republican U.S. Senate candidate to take on Democrat Barack Obama produced two finalists Tuesday – former presidential hopeful Alan Keyes and former Bush administration deputy drug czar Andrea Grubb Barthwell.
GOP state chairwoman Judy Baar Topinka announced Tuesday night that party leaders would interview Keyes and Barthwell on Wednesday and then choose one to take on the heavily favored Obama”
Well, I guess the Ober-Furher gets left out in the cold again. What’s a raving right-winger to do?
Why is Barthwell still under consideration? I thought she was pretty much down for the count after her Clarence Thomas-style sexual comments and harassment were revealed. I wouldn’t think the GOP would be into putting someone else with sexual skeletons in the closet after dumping Ryan like a hot potato.
Lord. Barthwell? Keyes? Is it not evident enough to these people -the possible nominees and the party- that this is both cynical and.
Oh…let’s get a black candidate. Hmmm, we’re so deep in black candidates, that we have to choose between a no-name, no money bureaucrat (won’t even mention the harassment thing – why bother); and a stark-raving mad perennial candidate. Oh, from Maryland.
I have no understanding of the republican mind, so have no sense of what a typical (not raving winger) downstate or collar county repub would think about these people.
Easy to say like, they don’t like gays anyway, so don’t see what Barthwell did wrong, but (except for rude wingers) I never thought the ordinary IL repub would think it was a plus that she acted so badly toward her staffers (ie, other repubs!)that they were forced to file complaints.
Keyes is such a jerk — the idea of one of my Bush-loving neighbors hosting a fundraiser for him is so unlikely as to be laughable.
I foresee a lot of repubs not going to the polls at all come election day in disgust.
Well…reliable sources just aren’t what they used to be. Keyes, huh? That guy really is a nut. But I know the right wingers do adore him. Maybe the Repubs think they’ll get some Lincoln-Douglass type debates going. Only problem is Keyes is creepy, and Obama has acknolwedged star quality charisma. It’s too bad the Repugnants aren’t as screwed up nationally as they are in Illinois.
“It just turned out to be that way,” Syverson said. “We don’t look at color the way the Democrats do. We look at the candidate and where they stand on the issues and their ability to articulate the issues,” he said.
The most representative quot came from this person, who, understandably, opted not to be named:
Hmmmm…. Let’s see… Oh yes. He expressed a desire to have public sex with his wife, and that’s just too freaky and embarrassing for the party muckety-mucks.
Okay, I’ve been to Keyes’ website, and vaguely remember being creeped out by him during the 2000 election… but can people help me out with specifics as to why Keyes is such a nut? Any good stories or statements? Did he really suggest that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote? Crank up the oppo research…
Here’s a quick and dirty bit of research (it took about 5 minutes). The Renew America website has transcripts from Keyes’s MSNBC show. In the first or second show, the discussion was about terrorism. In a segment of the show where he talks with “ordinary people,” Keyes all of a sudden brings up abortion. Then he tries to get one of the ordinary people to agree that women who have abortions exhibit the same mindset as Osama bin Laden.
I suppose we should just be thankful that the IL-GOP had to import this nut-job instead of finding a home-grown lunatic.
iam in search for a lost friend for over ten years now. iam a Ugandan young man aged 22 years and i searching for Mr Martin Ozinga with whom we met at st james church in Uganda when i was still very young, he gave me his address but i miss placed it. How about Flip Filipowski? He has a Ditka sized ego and he’s already a spectacular failure so he has nothing to lose.
You heard it from Mike first – it’s Oberweiss.
Is that a prediction – or insider knowledge?

I vote for the wig man.
Why does the Chicago Tribune hate America?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Illinois Republican parties’ best hope against Barack Obama:

Drew Carey is a Libertarian for Jerry Kohn.
You know it’s sad when they are interviewing our Libertarian candidate for Senate two years ago, Burgauer, who didn’t even get our nomination again this year.
The Nudge is drug-free. He gets high killing Bambi with a bow and arrow.
Not only under consideration… He’s a finalist (with Barthwell). Wow! Ridiculous.

Quote of the day, from Dave Syverson:
“They’re both black? Why, I…hadn’t noticed.”
OK, he didn’t say that, but close enough:
“It just turned out to be that way,” Syverson said. “We don’t look at color the way the Democrats do. We look at the candidate and where they stand on the issues and their ability to articulate the issues,” he said.

I would have to agree with the GOP strategist..

Thought Judy looked like she’d been mauled by wolves at the press conference.
Vasyl,
Nice piece of research. You should consider doing op research for a living… 😉
