GINGRICH: Well, I got a very funny e-mail from a retired military officer in Tampa who pointed out that most tire inflation is done at service stations and you pay for it. And it’s actually a higher profit margin than selling gasoline. So Sen. Obama was urging you to go out and enrich Big Oil by inflating your tires instead of buying gas.
Errr…I go down to the QuikTrip and they don’t charge me for air. Neither do the other places locally. I’m sure somewhere they do, but Think Progress is over analyzing the whole thing. Newt Gingrich doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about. And when the do the safety checks here in Missouri, the put the air in as part of the check.
Discourse getting stupider….

AP,
When I last filled my tank, it cost me over $50.00.
When I last filled my tires, it cost me $0.50.
I really don’t care what the petrol industries cut of that four-bits was.

To paraphrase Sarge from Cars, The 60s weren’t very good to Hannity and Gingrich, were they….
If you do go to a station that charges for air, the quarter or two you pop in the machine goes to the station owner (not “Big Oil”) who gets next to no profit for the gas they sell as it is.
Station owners make their money either by running a mechanic’s shop or a grocery mart, or both. The gas is generally just a way to attract customers for station owners because those profits go to the gas corporations.
But Newt and FAKE News wouldn’t actually want people to recognize that, not when we can drillherdrillnowdrilldrilldrill for the enzymes making new oil a mile under our backyards.
PS: The free air is usually at stations that have an auto repair shop. The compressors are used to lift the cars and excess pressure is what you can use for your car or bike tires. The quick mart type gas stations are usually the ones that charge for air because they have a machine dedicated to just the air pump and/or car vacuum.
I’m rather baffled that you all are paying for air. 😉 I don’t.
Only about half the stations around here charge for air… I go to the ones that don’t.
Capitalism at work.
