J-Ry and Blago are lying or stupid if they don’t plan on addressing a tax increase for school funding.

Josh Marshall follows up on some posts he made on his site regarding Sniper Culture (can’t find the actual post right now) in Salon. I think it is a pretty fair interview and the sniper type guy makes a rational case about why people spend a lot of money. Just because you are weird enough to want to spend a lotta time doing this stuff, doesn’t necessarily make you sick.
Additionally, a lot of men who grew up on farms could be making the shot this sniper has been making.
The one thing that struck me is the sniper resource guy could have pointed out the two Delta snipers killed in Mogadishu. They provide two heroic examples of people who do so and clearly were not sadistic lunatics. Lunatics perhaps, but lunatics with courage and integrity.
Addition: I’m impressed Marshall gave this guy a pretty fair hearing. I would have been tempted to toy with him a bit.
They added me. I’ll be adding them in a blogroll real soon–I’m trying to get a bunch of site maintenance in one big event instead of fighting blogger repeatedly.
J-Ry himself!
Capitol Fax reports J-Ry is whining that Blago is making the Nicarico case political. I’ll just quote the rich rest of the story.
Jim Ryan accused Rod Blagojevich not long ago of using the Nicarico murder case for political purposes. But this is not the first time the rape and murder of 10-year-old Jeanine Nicarico has been used in a campaign. The first time was way back in 1984, when a young DuPage County lawyer was vying to be the next state’s attorney. The young lawyer repeatedly blasted the incumbent state’s attorney for making no progress in the case. The young lawyer’s name? Jim Ryan. The incumbent, Michael Fitzsimmons, was under so much political pressure from Jim Ryan that he pushed for a grand jury indictment of Rolando Cruz and two others just days before the primary election, even though the lead investigator on the case with the DuPage County Sheriff’s office thought the three men were not involved in the crime. Years later, Cruz and the others were found innocent, freed from prison and paid over $3 million in restitution.
1984 and this boob and Birkett (the other boob) can’t own up to their mistakes.
Let’s look at John Fund’s little screed compared to the Argus Leader article on vote fraud in South Dakota. Is there a bit of cognitive disconnect here or what?
The Democrats have to be more careful about their registration drives. By only providing the incentive of per registration pay, some fraud is inevitable. Democrats need to monitor workers better or they are going to be embarressed by such problems.
This is not a major scandal and the Argus Leader points this out. All vote fraud is serious, but perspective is necessary. John Fund has none. Why not? Duh.
Kass points out the problem with Ryan’s claims of Blago being a Daley tool. It isn’t exactly accurate. He also points out how Daley has taken out the Democratic candidtates recently. Blago and Mell aren’t perfect, but they have more distance from the combine than does Ryan.
The bigger problem for J-Ry is that kind of bashing only turns out the base–and he needs a lot more than the base this year.
Mike Madigan does not get endorsed by the Tribune.
22nd District (Southwest Side): “Republican” Terrence Goggin has long been a wholly owned subsidiary of House Speaker Michael Madigan. The speaker’s political workers put Goggin on the ballot, then he hides for the duration of the campaign. This is the fourth time he has been Madigan’s opponent. This is not a real race, so there is no endorsement.
Given the nature of today’s reporting at the Trib–it is easier to just send one to the front page. Reports on the hearings, column by Zorn and pics are the highlights.
Tom Friedman takes on the Israeli divestiture cacophony.
The underlying dishonesty and anti-semitism of the divesture movement must be exposed. Israel is not perfect, but it is a hell of a lot better than even its better neighbors.
Via Eschaton.
I responded in the comments:Actually, much of the disinvestment movement for Israel is addressing joint ventures and subsidiaries in Israel. Applying the same rules to the Arab countries would mean disinvestment from ExxonMobil (not a bad idea on environmental grounds) Pepsico and a whole assortment of others.
Generally, companies with significant operations would be covered and we have many companies that do that. Coca-Cola was a significant target during South African divestiture.
I’ll add Unocal and the Burma situation as well.
