Bears Like Good Beer

Not partial to Busch (using whole story because it’s all funny):

When state Fish and Wildlife agents recently found a black bear passed out on the lawn of Baker Lake Resort, there were some clues scattered nearby – dozens of empty cans of Rainier Beer.

The bear apparently got into campers’ coolers and used his claws and teeth to puncture the cans. And not just any cans.

“He drank the Rainier and wouldn’t drink the Busch beer,” said Lisa Broxson, bookkeeper at the campground and cabins resort east of Mount Baker.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement Sgt. Bill Heinck said the bear did try one can of Busch, but ignored the rest.

“He didn’t like that (Busch) and consumed, as near as we can tell, about 36 cans of Rainier.”

A wildlife agent tried to chase the bear from the campground but the animal just climbed a tree to sleep it off for another four hours. Agents finally herded the bear away, but it returned the next morning.

Agents then used a large, humane trap to capture it for relocation, baiting the trap with the usual: doughnuts, honey and, in this case, two open cans of Rainier. That did the trick.

“This is a new one on me,” Heinck said. “I’ve known them to get into cans, but nothing like this. And it definitely had a preference.”

To give you an idea, a grown male black bear probably weighs between 180 – 250 pounds meaning that was one drunk bear.

Regardless of Who Wins the Presidential Contest

Look for an assault on No Child Left Behind when it starts hitting suburban schools as has just happened.

And though some of the schools continue to perform well overall, bringing every subgroup up to the same level–the stated goal of No Child Left Behind–remains a daunting task.

“The more subgroups you have, the more likely you are to not make [testing goals],” said Phil Prale, assistant superintendent of Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200, with a student body that is 66 percent white, 27 percent African-American and 4 percent Latino. Prale said that while the school’s overall test scores improved last year, low-income students did not reach state goals in math.

“These are top-notch schools,” he said. “When they land on these lists, I suppose we could reexamine what are the criteria and goal of the legislation.”

The blathering of NCLB supporters tries to sell opposition to the criteria as being against standards whent he real opposition is to rather bizarre and statistically unsound methods of determining whether a school is failing or not.

Fred Phelps to Bloomington

Fred Phelps of GodHatesFags.com Infamy, is visiting Bloomington and Peoria:

Westboro Baptist Church spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper said her group will send 10 to 15 people, including children, to Bloomington and Peoria Electrolux sites Aug. 23 because the company is based in Sweden.

Unrelated to company activity, the government in Sweden jailed a preacher for making anti-gay statements, she said. Phelps-Roper described the protest as informational, not seeking a boycott or any other action against Electrolux.

The civil rights group Southern Poverty Law Center describes church leader Fred Phelps as “America’s most rabid and vicious hater of homosexuals.” Westboro and the center spar over the center’s designation of it as a “hate group.”

Tentative plans are for Aug. 22 pickets outside St. John’s Lutheran, Holy Trinity Catholic, St. Matthew’s Episcopal, Wesley United Methodist, Second Presbyterian and Vale Community churches.

Second Press was my family’s church growing up and is about the best example of a uptight mainstream church one could hope to find. Seeing Phelps outside would be a hoot.

Phelps and gang visited my current church (also Second Press–different place, different outlook) a couple years ago and the overwhelming reaction was pity.

Warning, the flyer is offensive

I assume this is on the way out to the sodomite whorehouse also known as the Republican National Convention (his line, not mine)

Doh.. Rodney forgot to check the law

Taking a moment away from kicking a man while he still thinks he’s standing, Rodney Alexander switched parties as the last minute before filing. This didn’t allow any Democrats to get in the race.

The problem:

A voter in Louisiana is filing a legal challenge to defective Congressman Rodney Alexander’s ballot qualification, and seeks an injunction preventing the Secretary of State from issuing ballots printed with his name. The petition, filed by a voter and based on both Louisiana statute and prior precedent, rightly argues that Alexander’s SECOND filing 20 minutes before the deadline is in effect a withdrawal of his candidacy under Louisiana law since candidates are prohibited from amending their ballot qualification in any way once it has been made. Others in Louisiana have been tossed for just this kind of behavior in the past. Look for a news releases from multiple parties soon…

Or as James Carville pointed out:

James Carville said Alexander “was known as the stupidest Democrat in Louisiana, which would probably make him the smartest Republican in Washington.”

I don’t care much if you switch parties, but that was pretty sleazy and it may just backfire.

As AM points out in comments, Rodney may want to think about a race here in Illinois in 2008. Dick Durbin will need an opponent and we see how these things are going.

SEE–Rick Agrees With Me!

The Illinois Democratic Party sucks online. Sucks. Bites. Blows. Whatever.

Rick points out that Madigan isn’t exactly inviting, but also, how feels invited into participation by the Da Speaker? There is no rule that he should be on the front page and given his reclusive ways, it makes no sense. There is another guy who could be out there? Maybe a certain next Senator?

Even the Missouri Dems have a better site and half of them are looking for new jobs with Claire winning.

C’mon, the Cross guys are doing amazing things, the Dems are scaring the children.

Speaking of Carpet Baggers

Tim Hutchison of the idiot Hutchison’s in Arkansas has a bit of a problem–he didn’t bother to live in his district long enough before filing for office. Hutchison comes from the Arkansas Hutchison’s who we’d all hoped had gone away. Help out his challenger Robbyn Tumey before little Timmy shows up on the national stage.

This morning, Robbyn Tumey, the Democratic nominee for state representative
of District 95, filed a legal challenge to Timothy C. Hutchison?s
eligibility under the residency requirements of the Arkansas Constitution.
If the Circuit Court of Pulaski County grants Ms. Tumey?s petition, Mr.
Hutchinson will be removed from the November ballot.

? This matter has not yet been set for a hearing.

? The complaint and petition asks that the Court declare Mr. Hutchinson
ineligible as a candidate for state representative, District 95 and asks for
an order removing him from the ballot.

? The complaint and petition alleges that Timothy C. Hutchinson did not
satisfy the candidate residency requirement of Article 5, Section 4 of the
Arkansas Constitution. Article 5, Section 4 of the Arkansas Constitution
requires that state representative candidates reside in their districts for
at least one year before their election.

? In this instance, Timothy C. Hutchinson was required to reside in District
95 on or before November 2, 2003.

The complaint and petition lays out the following facts regarding Mr.
Hutchinson?s residency:

o In 2003, Mr. Hutchinson lived at 524 Tumbleweed Street in Lowell,
Arkansas, a residence located in District 94, not District 95.

o Some time prior to November 2, 2003, Mr. Hutchinson rented a duplex
located in District 95 at 911 E. Mimosa Street, Rogers, Arkansas.

o However, he never made this duplex his residence. He never moved into
District 95.

o On November 2, 2003 and continuing for some time after that date, Mr.
Hutchinson?s residence remained at 524 Tumbleweed Street in District 94.

o Thus, Mr. Hutchinson is ineligible to be a candidate for state
representative of District 95. Jenkins v. Bogard, 335 Ark. 334, 341, 980
S.W.2d 270 (1998) (?to effect a change of domicile from one locality to
another, there must be an actual abandonment of the first domicile, coupled
with an intention not to return to it and there must be a new domicile
acquired by actual residence in another place or jurisdiction, with intent
of making the last acquired residence a permanent home?).

o In the Spring of 2004, Mr. Hutchinson moved to 309 Eclipse Street, Lowell,
Arkansas, a residence located within District 95.

STATEMENT OF ROBBYN TUMEY ON TUMEY V. DANIELS, ET AL.

This matter will not deter me from talking about issues with the voters of
District 95, namely reducing health care costs, improving our infrastructure
and making our schools more accountable to parents. I believe that our
legislature should act to reduce health care costs for employers and
employees. We can find new and innovative ways to build new roads quickly
without raising taxes. Our educational system should be held accountable to
the people who fund it, the taxpayers and families of Arkansas.
