Call It A Comeback
So much for the Keyes will keep him home theory…in fact, staying out of the news is serving Barack quite well. While he needs to cement his support through standard travels and big media events that showcase his talents, Keyes provides a giant distraction when Obama is out of the news.
Kass puts the issue into a rather good perspective:
I am willing, though, to condemn him for something–he’s a selfish loon.
And he’s foolishly played right into the hands of the Illinois Republican Party establishment, in a desperate political fight over the future of the GOP between conservatives and the combine Republicans who’ve been in bed (not literally) with Chicago Democrats for years.
For those not realizing the likely outcome, Keyes is first choice of Democrats everywhere. I thought, along with many others, that the floating of his name was a joke because we are standing exactly where I figured we’d be after he became a nominee. And I thought the Illinois GOP would see that too. When Syverson, or Jack Roeser, or Rauschenberger say they didn’t expect this, they are either stupid or lying. There could be nothing in his Keyes background that wouldn’t cause one to expect the disaster that he has brought.
One can make reasonable arguments for many (not all) of the general positions he argues for, but he doesn’t do that–he turns up the volume and makes himself a caricature.
That Alan Keyes can’t control himself. Read the frothing in the first half and then notice the bit at the end.
Keyes appeared at Thursday’s breakfast – sitting in a different room from Topinka – and dismissed calls by some that he apologize to the Cheney family.
“I think folks like that are being a little careless with the integrity of our party,” he told reporters. “We have adopted a plank against gay marriage. We have adopted that plank for a very good reason, and I have presented the clear logic of that plank to people.
“Folks are coming to me saying, ‘Well, we need to exempt our children from the consequences of that logic.’ So, if it’s our child that’s involved, we won’t apply that logic to them? What kind of a party are we if we’re going to take a stand and then try to claim special privileges? I won’t do it.”
There’s like a thousand ways to hold his position and not bring in specific families, but not for Dear Alan.
I’ve always found the Sox to have more room for the street preacher type of fans.
*A Keyes comment: Hey! Hey! When asked whether he was a Cubs or Sox fan,Keyes — a recent transplant from Maryland — stated, “My son, Andrew, says I need to be a Cubs fan because they need you more. But I’ve taken his opinion under advisement.”
Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, who has been a rising star in the party, never touched on the Keyes campaign despite evoking Keyes’ opponent Barack Obama’s name in his speech on Tuesday.
Steele quipped that Obama gave a “moving defense of the conservative principles of the Republican Party” in his speech at the Democratic National Convention in July.
“I won’t comment on Ambassador Keyes’ decision to run the race that he is running in Illinois,” Steele said in an interview. “He has made a very strategic decision. Maybe he sees something in polling trends that I don’t see. I don’t know. I can’t comment on that.”

A lot of weak-kneed Republicans are running away from Alan Keyes because of his remarks about homosexuality. Weak-minded “conservative” pundits are making themselves look more “mainstream” by denouncing Keyes. Homosexual activists and their friends in the press have conducted a high-tech lynching of the U.S. candidate from Illinois.
Farah is pretty funny:
Alan Keyes didn’t say all homosexuals were selfish hedonists. Read the quote again: “The essence of … family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it’s possible to have a marriage state that in principle excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism.”
He said those promoting same-sex marriage are advocating a lifestyle choice based on selfish hedonism. This may seem like splitting hairs to those embracing the same-sex marriage program ? as most of my colleagues in the press do. However, they are two entirely different statements. Every major news organization in the world unfairly accused Alan Keyes of saying something he didn’t say. In other words, they lied. They lied big time. They twisted. They distorted. They even put words in his mouth.
It all depends on what Keyes meant by “Of course she is”

But Keyes refused to back down today, saying he was merely stating what he believes is the truth, as he would to his own daughter if she engaged in lesbian acts.
?If my own daughter were a homosexual or lesbian, I would love my daughter, but I would tell her she was in sin,? Keyes said.
Keyes first made the remarks Monday night in his interview with a satellite radio network geared toward gays and lesbians. Keyes emphasized it was a reporter, not he, who brought up the name of Mary Cheney, who the vice president has publicly acknowledged is gay.

So can someone let me know how this isn’t about Cheney’s daughter and homosexuals in general?

After ranting for about 15 minutes against gay people, the woman introducing Keyes called his candidacy “a finger in the dyke of decadence.” The double meaning, as far as I can tell was completely unintentional and completely hilarious, at least to me. The actual republicans in the room were too wrapped up in their hate-fest to notice, perhaps.
