Weekend Open Thread

After the last one and one-half weeks, I need the weekend off so I’m out of here.

For those here over the weekend talk amongst yourselves, but play nicely. Next week, with the campaign back to normal levels I’ll cover the Rosemont Casino debacle and the budget. In addition, as some have already started to do in comments, we’ll be talking about the positions Obama and Ryan have taken. I’m especially befuddled by a few Ryan has taken (duh-I’m a Democrat).

Thanks

This isn’t Kos or Atrios, but ArchPundit had over 3600 visits yesterday. I’ve had bigger days, but not for regular coverage, so thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it.

And remember–you can advertise on ArchPundit now. See the right side–and donate to Barack while you are there…..

Know Any Candidates Who Need Cheap Advertising

Over at the right is an add for Barack Obama–you too can have an ad there. If you know any candidates or people with something to sell, they can advertise on ArchPundit for
$10/week
$15/two weeks
$20/month

The site is currently averaging over 500 visits a day during the week. That will probably go down to around 400 or so after the primary. The key advantages of advertising here is that it is

A) cheap
B) targeted to a specific audience of moderate to liberal to progressive readers who are generally politically active and aware
C) likely to draw editorial content if it something that interests me

While good coverage isn’t guaranteed, if you advertise, as Atrios says, I notice the ads too and am more likely to bring it up. Click on the link at the right to figure out how.

Comment Policy

While I don’t have some elaborate comments policy, I do from time to time delete comments. It doesn’t mean I’m necessarily mad, but it does mean there is information that I have no way to corroborate or it is personally critical of other posters. I just deleted two comments because they contained rumors about the personal life of one of the Senate Candidates. I understand that the poster was probably thinking out loud more than criticizing the candidate, but while I don’t take responsibility for comments, I do not feel uncomfortable having comments that impugn someone’s character without any hard evidence. So comment away in good taste and if you go to far, I’ll disappear them without incident.

Hi to All the New Readers

I just want to welcome the significant new readership I’m noticing from the huge uptick in traffic the last week.

For those unfamiliar with me, I live in Saint Louis and have an obsession with Illinois politics. I’m a partisan Democrat, though when I did live in Illinois I voted for Republican on several occasion. That said, I love Illinois politics and that is what this site is devoted to covering.

For those wondering why I bother to endorse candidate? Because I can and I think it is fun. While I’m serious about it, I also don’t take it too seriously that a lot of people come here for my views. For one thing, most of the political junkies who make their way here made up their minds long ago. But thanks for visiting and please come back.

And for any candidates or interest groups out there, look to your right and see the Obama ad. You too can have that ad space cheap. Just click on the advertise on ArchPundit. Right now, that money will all go back into paying for the site. Bandwidth and server space costs. I’m sounding like public radio now so I have to go.

Today’s Schedule

Okay, so we have a circus in town tonight AKA the Saint Louis Board of Education meeting that is going to introduce options to reduce $25 million+ from the budget (roughly 5% of last years fiscal year budget–after already reducing the budget by 10% without firing a teacher or reducing their pay) and a sitting Board member has a restraining order against her from another Board Member and an asst. Superintendent. On top of that 14 citizens have filed a quo warranto motion to have her removed from the Board for her past actions including dumping a pitcher of water on said Asst. Superintendent and being taken away from District offices while high on cocaine screaming in the middle of the street for God to Help her. The pitcher was motivated by her memories of what Dorothy did to the Wicked Witch of the West. She also put a curse on me. I kid you not.

So my day is pretty busy meaning endorsements will be late tonight and posting will be intermittent. But look for later night material. And of course, tips from those in the know will get top priority today.

First Advertiser

Thanks to Justin who is apparently doing an independent expenditure for Obama! All right! And fitting for later in the day.

Let me explain why I’m hyping advertising. ArchPundit is now hosted by Fatdays–essentially a friend who thinks it is cool to have lots of local original content generated. That said, ArchPundit takes more space and bandwidth than we ever realized. It is going to cost more, but other options–such as Typepad turned out not to be realistic. I’m generally uncomfortable with hyping donations because I like to be able to walk away for breaks from time to time without feeling guilty. Ads allow me not to ask for cash and provide something for others. Currently the site is averaging between 400-500 visits per weekday and while the audience is not huge, it is full of political junkies.
