While I didn’t have time to respond to Eric’s post on Daley’s crackdown on cyclists, I’m not suprised at all by the reaction of many cyclists

While I don’t currently commute by bike I did for a long time. Most of the serious cyclists I know have no problem with increased enforcement on cyclists because if done right, it’s a powerful educational tool. While I agree with Eric that being overly agressive would be stupid, ticketing reckless cyclists treats cyclists as they should be treated–as traffic. The biggest problem is that in cities traffic enforcement is quite poor so as a whole, there’s a lot of recklessness by motorists and cyclists.

  1. ‘Zactly. Living in Lakeview has been taking your life into your own hands as a pedestrian this summer. As I type this, I’m rubbing the scar from a lengthy gash in my shin caused by a biker flying by on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago.

  2. Yeah Guy, I’ve had the same experience in Lakeview lately. Strangely enough, having the barrelling cyclist scream “on your left” as he or she bears down doesn’t help. It’s been bad for a while though. A couple of years ago, one of my neighbors’ dogs was hit by a kid on a bicycle and the father of the kid yelled at my neighbor for not getting her dog out of the way fast enough.

  3. I sometimes walk to work along Milwaukee, which has a bike path. Every day at the same time, some guy comes flying down the sidewalk, expecting me to move of his way. He should get a ticket.

  4. It’s strange to me that they got complaints about people riding on the sidewalk – a serious and dangerous offense – so they went and ticketed cyclists rolling stop signs.

That’s ridiculous. As a cyclist, I’m not going to stop rolling stop signs, and as a driver, I don’t want anyone to. If I’m a driver, and a cyclist comes to a complete stop at a stop sign just before I do, then I have to wait as he laboriously pedals through the intersection.

I think cyclists should just go through the stop sign with the car that’s going parallel to them, whenever it goes, and cops should only ticket those who interfere with the operation of the intersection by pedaling through when it’s the turn of someone going across the cross street.
