Biss Lists Individual PAC Contributors, Can Coulson Follow Suit?

August 23, 2007 By: ArchPundit Category: Uncategorized

Beth Coulson has tried to make an issue out of Daniel Biss’ receiving money from ACT Blue Illinois, a PAC registered in Illinois, claiming:

“Act Blue” donations are reported in lump sums, but individual contributors through “Act Blue” are not required to be identified “so we don’t know where the money is coming from,” Coulson said. “It’s a (political action committee) that raises money from all around the country. It’s exactly the kind of PAC we’ve tried to address in ethics reform.”

Daniel took the issue to heart and has listed every individual donor to ACT Blue that was for him (It’s a targeted PAC).

Now would Beth Coulson care to list all of the individual donors that contributed to the PACs she receives money from on her site?

Go to Act Blue and get your name up on Daniel’s site

[...] ArchPundit points out that, to be intellectually honest on this topic, Rep. Coulson ought to now determine who all the donors to all those myriad PACs are that have helped her own campaign and publicly disclose those individuals (just as Mr. Biss immediately did). [...]

I am a lifelong Democrat. (I am a volunteer for Dan Seals.)

That said, Beth Coulson is an outstanding State Rep. She is a truly independent, thoughtful, liberal Republican. She is an outstanding representative for her District. (She is everything Mark Kirk says he is, but isn’t.)

Yet, for some reason, every two years the Democrats come after her.

So, as a Democrat, here’s my suggestion to my party…

Leave Beth Coulson alone, and go after the REAL PROBLEM in our dysfunctional state government. I refer, of course, to our…you know what’s coming…”Governor” (term used very loosely), Mr. “Sound-Bite” Blago!!

Interesting how many of his largest donors are from out of state. What is Dan’s connection to New York and Mass?

None really. They are simply small dollar donors. What’s Coulson’s relationship with Big Pharma?

Perhaps you could tell me what she does that is so fantastic?

$250, $500, and $1,000 are “small” donors to you? I guess we have different definitions for the word small.

  6. # 6 ArchPundit Says:

$250 by almost any measure is a small donation and often $500 donations are the line between big and small when categorizing. He had 7 or 8 donations of $500 or more from out of state. Of course, he got his undergraduate degree at Harvard and his PhD at MIT so I’d say he’s spent some time there. Taking it a step further, other towns on the list include Princeton, Chapel Hill, Stanford, Palo Alto, Austin, and Ann Arbor. Gee, what do those have in common to a college professor?

Now, I’m baffled by the notion that his biggest donors are from out of state, looking at his D-2 that’s not the case except in the case of two people named Biss. I have a theory about why they might have donated. If you are confusing his list of donors on the page on his web site with his whole report, we have the source of your confusion. That’s only a list of people who gave to ACT Blue to give money to Daniel. His D-2 contains several others and those who gave the largest amounts who are largely named Biss or live in the area of the District.

The larger question is that you seem curious about his donations, but not the pharmaceutical lobby’s donations to his opponent…why?

Since this post was about his ActBlue donations, yes I was writing about his ActBlue donations. At least now we’ve answered the question of his connection to Mass, which you ignored in your first response. The ActBlue list on Biss’ website shows that of four donors who gave $1,000 or more, half are from out of state.

I’m not discussing donations to his opponent because the topic isn’t about his opponent. Why do you think changing the topic to Coulson’s donations is the best response to a simple observation about Biss’ donations?

BTW, is that Rahm Emanuels’ older brother on Biss’ list of ActBlue donors? Interesting.

Because it was a dumb question. Gee, what academic knows people in those places?

Because it was a dumb question and oddly hostile despite your moniker.

Arch, I think you need to step back and remember that not everyone who comments is a republican troll. There’s nothing dumb about asking what connection someone has to a place when they have a number of contributions from there. I looked at his website again and it turns out that he went to school there. Its a reasonable question with a simple answer.

I’m a Democrat who doesn’t automatically accept someone as the second coming of netroots candidates just because he volunteered on a few campaigns and commented on a few blogs. There’s nothing wrong with exercising a little judgment amidst the online hype about Biss. There are more important state Rep races and Democrats to support who have an actual chance at winning.

Fair enough and I’m sorry. I do tend to get a bit edgy and I think the two coming in at the same time set off the spidey senses.

That said, Daniel is doing a lot of the legwork and fundraising the way candidates should and I think he’s more than just a netroots candidates. If you get a chance, meet him and see. While I knew Daniel when he posted here, I also have talked to him about this race, and while he’s working the netroots, he’s also working the District hard and doing his call time.
