Concerned Kirk Has a Look-A-Like

July 13, 2007 By: ArchPundit Category: Illinois Congressional Races

Jay Footlik

Didn’t take long for 10th Congressional District Democrat Jay Footlik to alter his position on the Iraq war.

Last month, as he got into the race, I asked Footlik a couple questions about his position on the Iraq war, sure to be a key issue in the primary against Democrat Dan Seals. Here’s what I wrote:

  • On Iraq, Footlik said he doesn’t necessarily support a “hard and fast deadline” for withdrawal, but thinks Congress has to force President Bush to come up with “something close to a deadline.”

To say Footlik was elusive on the war topic is a fair characterization.

So I was somewhat surprised to see this news release just arrive in the ol’ inbox:

“It’s time to end our involvement in Iraq,” Footlik is quoted as saying in the release.

More from the release: Jay Footlik supports the proposals in Congress that call for American troops to be out of Iraq by the end of April 2008. Military leaders on the ground know what they need to do and how to get to that point — safely and responsibly. “The process of redeployment should, in my view, begin no later than 90 days from today,” declared Footlik.

Looks like Footlik handed Seals his first ready-made issue, and candidates aren’t even circulating nominating petitions yet.

  • Haven’t we had enough of Concerned Kirk’s bloviations about being concerned about the war and then not voting like it.  Why do we need a Democratic candidate pulling the same routine?

Jay’s position on Iraq has always been and will continue to be withdrawal.

I spoke with his campaign manager at the Deerfield 4th of July party. He said Footlick didn’t support an immediate withdraw. no stedfast deadline. looks like Footlick blows with the wind. Flip flopping isn’t a quality I want in a Congressman.

because i was curious about this i spoke with jay’s campaign manager too. just now.

your assertions are absolutely not true.

his manager said that jay supports getting out of iraq, and that jay thinks that bush and kirk have completely failed the tenth district. NEVER would he say that jay doesn’t support withdrawing from iraq.

in fact, both dan and jay agree on the timeline, albeit as a middle east policy expert, jay thinks it’s a bad idea to tell your enemies your strategy (i.e. timetable).

kirk and bush don’t understand that.

So Eric Krol, the above commenter and more in e-mail are lying? If he changed his position, and it’s clear he did given the number of people I’m hearing from who indicate they talked to him, he should just say so.

====in fact, both dan and jay agree on the timeline, albeit as a middle east policy expert, jay thinks it’s a bad idea to tell your enemies your strategy (i.e. timetable).

So will he vote for a timetable or not? Is he going to be another person who would vote for a bill that is only advisory to the Bush administration or will he vote to end the war? The above is contradictory. Other than setting a deadline in law, how does one plan to end this war?

BTW, that’s an interesting video. Do you plan on giving credit to the folks who shot the video? They aren’t a part of your campaign and pretending they are is dishonest.

footlik’s clumsy efforts only continue to alienate progressives on the north shore. several of the people mobilized by aaei are truly upset by this. footlik’s gotten off to a very bad start…
